Wike Celebrates Supreme Court Judgment Reinstating Martin’s Led Rivers State Assembly

A video has surfaced online showing former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in what appears to be a celebration following the Supreme Court’s verdict that sacked all 23 local government chairmen in Rivers State.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur, declared the October 5, 2024, local government elections in the state invalid, citing gross violations of the Electoral Act by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
The apex court found that the electoral body continued voter registration even after announcing an election date, an act deemed a fundamental breach of due process.
Shortly after the judgment, a viral video emerged showing Wike in a jubilation mood, dancing and celebrating with his allies.
The video has since ignited widespread reactions, given Wike’s well-documented rift with his political protégé and current governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
While Wike has yet to make any official statement on the ruling, political analysts suggest his reaction is linked to the ongoing power tussle between him and Governor Fubara.
The two have been at loggerheads since Fubara took office, with the governor gradually asserting independence from Wike’s political influence— an act seen as defiance by his former godfather.
The Supreme Court ruling is a major setback for Governor Fubara, as the now-sacked local government chairmen were largely considered his loyalists.
Their removal further weakens Fubara’s political structure at the grassroots level, potentially tilting power dynamics in favor of Wike, who has been working to maintain his influence in the state.
With this latest development, the fate of local government administration in Rivers State remains uncertain. Observers believe this could further escalate the political crisis in the state, as Wike and Fubara continue their battle for control.
The ruling raises significant questions about governance in Rivers State. Will Governor Fubara appoint caretaker committees to replace the sacked LG chairmen? How will Wike’s camp leverage this victory in the ongoing battle for supremacy?
One thing is certain—this Supreme Court verdict has added fuel to the already burning political battle in Rivers State. The coming days will reveal how both camps maneuver this latest twist in the unfolding drama.
