2026 Prosperity Cup: Active Ladies, Okoroma FC Emerge Champions Of Gov Diri’s Cup
The grand finale of the 2026 Edition of the Prosperity Football Cup lived up to expectations as football enthusiasts across Bayelsa State witnessed an exciting display of grassroots football talents at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Ovom, Yenagoa.
In a thrilling male final decided on Friday evening, Okoroma United FC of Nembe Local Government Area emerged champions after an impressive performance against Akinima/Biogbo FC of Ogboloma in Yenagoa Local Government Area.
The highly entertaining encounter attracted football lovers, sports stakeholders, government officials and dignitaries from across the state, all of whom were treated to an evening of skillful football artistry and healthy competition.
Speaking after the final match, the Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, congratulated Okoroma United FC on their historic triumph and commended both finalists for their discipline, resilience and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
The Governor, who attended the final alongside his Deputy, Peter Akpe, expressed satisfaction with the standard of football displayed during the tournament, describing the Prosperity Cup as a major platform for discovering and nurturing young talents across Bayelsa communities.
According to him, the competition has continued to unite youths from different parts of the state while promoting peace, friendship and socio-economic development through sports.
Governor Diri also applauded the female teams for their impressive performances during the women’s category of the tournament.
He noted with delight that Active Ladies of Agudama defeated Afini Ladies of Amarata in an exciting female final that equally showcased the growing standard of women’s football in Bayelsa State.
The Governor praised the organisers of the Prosperity Cup for sustaining the competition over the years, stressing that the tournament has become one of the biggest grassroots football competitions in Nigeria.
He further appreciated the support of corporate sponsors and partners whose contributions have continued to enhance the success and credibility of the tournament.
Special appreciation was extended to Emmanuel Efe Emefienim, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Trust Bank, for the institution’s continued partnership and commitment to youth and sports development in Bayelsa State.
Governor Diri also acknowledged the strategic partnership between the organisers of the Prosperity Cup and FC Barcelona, noting that the collaboration would further create opportunities for young footballers in the state to develop their talents and gain international exposure.
He congratulated all the participating teams, including the 227 male teams and 21 female teams that took part in this year’s edition, describing their participation as a strong testament to the growing passion for football among Bayelsa youths.
The governor reaffirmed the commitment of his administration, under the Government of Assured Prosperity, to continue using sports as a veritable tool for youth empowerment, talent discovery and social development.
He emphasized that beyond winning trophies, the Prosperity Cup remains a platform for inspiring hope, building character and creating opportunities for the younger generation across the state.
The 2026 edition of the Prosperity Cup has once again reinforced Bayelsa’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading hubs for grassroots sports development, while producing memorable moments for players, supporters and football lovers alike.
