Ahead of the 30th anniversary celebration of the creation of Bayelsa State, the Governor, Senator Douye Diri has paid a courtesy visit to the family of the late Nigerian Head of State, General Sani Abacha, at their residence in Asokoro, Abuja.

Hotnews reports that Governor Diri was warmly received by the late Head of State’s widow, Her Excellency Dr. Maryam Abacha, his eldest son, Mohammed, other members of the family and grandchildren.

During the visit, Dr. Maryam Abacha shared nostalgic memories of the family’s time in Port Harcourt when General Abacha served as Brigade Commander at Bori Camp.

General Abacha remains remembered for responding to the longstanding aspiration of the Ijaw people for a homogenous state in the Niger Delta. On October 1, 1996, he announced the creation of Bayelsa State from the old Rivers State, giving the Ijaw people a distinct political identity.

In recognition of this historic contribution and in appreciation of the progress Bayelsa has recorded over the years, the Bayelsa State Government will posthumously honour General Abacha alongside other illustrious sons and daughters of Bayelsa State and the Ijaw nation.

The 30th anniversary celebrations will feature the inauguration of projects executed by the Assured Prosperity Administration and a four-day programme of activities beginning September 28, culminating in a state dinner and awards ceremony on October 1.
