Abacha Freed Ijaw People From Marginalization With Bayelsa Creation – Gov. Diri
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has praised the late former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, for creating Bayelsa State on October 1, 1996, saying the decision liberated the Ijaw people from political marginalisation and injustice.
Governor Diri made the remarks at the Dinner and Awards Night marking Bayelsa’s 30th anniversary, where the state honoured 63 individuals and organisations for their contributions to the creation, development and promotion of Bayelsa and Ijaw nation.
The Governor highlighted Bayelsa’s transformation over the past 30 years, citing the growth in tertiary institutions, road infrastructure, healthcare and other sectors as evidence of the progress made since the creation of Bayelsa State.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was among the honourees, dedicated his award to his late political mentor and leader, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of blessed memory.
Dr. Jonathan acknowledged that although Bayelsa had not reached its full potential, the state had made significant progress and remained grateful to Abacha for its creation.
Other award recipients included Major Isaac Adaka Boro, Chief Harold Dappa-Biriye, former military administrators, former Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, sports personalities Daniel Igali and Blessing Oborududu, musicians Timaya and Timi Dakolo, academics, businessmen, public servants and other Bayelsans.
The anniversary celebration, themed “Celebrating Legacies,” brought together former leaders, government officials, traditional rulers, diplomats, business leaders and members of the Abacha family to recognise the people and institutions that contributed to Bayelsa’s history and development.
