The Bayelsa State Government has disclosed that it has upgraded, renovated and equipped 62 primary and secondary healthcare facilities across the state in the last two years as part of efforts to improve access to quality healthcare delivery.

Hotnews gathered the Commissioner for Health, Professor Seiyefa Brisibe, disclosed this on Wednesday during the 201st session of the State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa.

Prof. Brisibe explained that the facilities comprise 49 primary healthcare centres and 13 secondary healthcare facilities, including those located in remote and hard-to-reach communities.

He commended Governor Douye Diri for investing in healthcare infrastructure and human capacity development, particularly the provision of residential accommodation and at least two sources of power supply in upgraded health facilities, as well as ambulance services and improved welfare packages for health workers.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP), led by its President, Dr. Annas Idris, presented Governor Diri with an Award of Exemplary Leadership in recognition of his administration’s commitment to healthcare development.

Dr. Idris particularly applauded the state’s deployment of Zipline drone technology for delivering essential medical supplies, including blood and vaccines, to hard-to-reach communities.

He also praised the improved welfare packages for medical and dental practitioners, noting that the initiatives would boost productivity and help address brain drain.

Responding, Governor Diri dedicated the award to the Commissioner for Health and members of the State Executive Council, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sustained investment in the health sector.

The Governor also highlighted the importance of Bayelsa Medical University and the use of Zipline technology in strengthening healthcare delivery across the state.

On the political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections, Diri urged politicians and their supporters to embrace issue-based campaigns and avoid abusive language and inflammatory statements capable of creating disaffection and threatening the state’s peace.

He emphasised that political differences should not undermine the bonds of brotherhood and unity among Bayelsans.
