Ogbia, Nembe Stakeholders Zone Senate Seat To Brass

Leaders, Stakeholders from Nembe and Brass Local Government Areas in Bayelsa State have jointly resolved to zone Bayelsa East Senatorial seat to Brass ahead of the general elections as a landmark step towards preserving political harmony and equity that has existed for decades in the district.

The decision emerged after a series of high-level consultations, strategic meetings, and behind-the-scenes engagements involving traditional rulers, political leaders, youth groups, women representatives, and opinion leaders from the three LGAs (Ogbia, Nembe and Brass), respectively.

Sources familiar with the deliberations revealed that the consensus was reached in the spirit of fairness and adherence to a long-established, though informal, zoning arrangement that has guided political leadership distribution within the district.

Bayelsa East Senatorial District, comprising primarily Ogbia, Nembe and Brass LGAs, has historically relied on a rotational understanding to maintain balance, and prevent dominance by any one bloc within the senatorial district for decades now.

Stakeholders noted that the zoning principle has played a critical role in sustaining peace, fostering cooperation, and ensuring that all constituent communities feel a sense of belonging in the political process.

Speaking after the resolution, several prominent leaders, stakeholders and elders underscored the importance of honoring the existing agreements.

They stressed that Brass LGA, having patiently waited its turn under the rotational framework, should now be supported to produce the next senator.

“This is a collective decision reached in good faith,” a stakeholder remarked.

“Our goal is to strengthen unity, avoid unnecessary political tension, and uphold the principles of justice and inclusiveness that have kept our district stable over the years.”

On their remarks, stakeholders and leaders from Ogbia and Nembe LGAs, reiterated their unwavering support and commitment towards peace and cooperation, calling on political actors, aspirants, and supporters to respect the zoning arrangement in the district.

They warned against actions that will truncate or undermine the fragile unity achieved through dialogue and mutual understanding and unity in the district.

Community leaders from Brass LGA expressed appreciation for the show of solidarity, describing the development as both timely and encouraging.

They pledged to work with all relevant leaders, stakeholders to ensure that the process of selecting a candidate reflects competence, credibility, and broad acceptance across the district.

The resolution has greatly shaped the dynamics of the senatorial race, by narrowing the contest to aspirants from Brass LGA. The agreement is expected to reduce intra-district rivalry while encouraging a more issue-based and consensus-driven campaigns.

Leaders and stakeholders agreed to establish mechanisms for conflict resolution and consensus-building to ensure that the zoning decision translates into a smooth and widely accepted senatorial elections.

The joint resolution is widely seen as a proactive effort to prevent political friction and reinforce a culture of power-sharing within Bayelsa East.
