Diri Clarifies Stand On 2027 Bayelsa Guber Race, Backs West Or East For Fairness
By Preye Bagou, Yenagoa
Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has reportedly declared his position on the succession debate ahead of the 2027 governorship election, stating that fairness, equity and political balance would guide his support for whoever succeeds him after the expiration of his administration.
Governor Diri made the declaration during a state executive council meeting in government house, Yenagoa on Wednesday 6th May, 2026.
The governor emphasized that the next governorship candidate he would support must emerge from either Bayelsa West or Bayelsa East Senatorial Districts, insisting that the principle of justice and inclusiveness must be respected in the state’s political arrangement.
According to political stakeholders close to the government house in Yenagoa, Governor Diri believes that after the completion of his tenure, it would be unfair for power to remain within the same axis, stressing that all parts of the state deserve a sense of belonging in the leadership structure of Bayelsa State.
The position of the governor has already generated widespread discussions across the political landscape, with many observers describing it as a strong signal towards maintaining political harmony and strengthening the existing zoning understanding among the senatorial districts in the state.
Bayelsa State is divided into three senatorial districts—Bayelsa East, Bayelsa West and Bayelsa Central. Governor Diri himself hails from Bayelsa Central, and analysts believe his latest position is aimed at ensuring rotational balance and avoiding political tension ahead of the next election cycle.
Political commentators have noted that the governor’s statement may reshape early alignments among aspirants and political stakeholders already positioning themselves for the 2027 governorship contest.
The declaration is also being interpreted as a move to encourage unity within the ruling political structure and discourage unhealthy rivalry among the districts.
Supporters of the governor have commended the stance, describing it as statesmanlike and consistent with the principles of fairness he has repeatedly advocated in public affairs.
In several public engagements, Governor Diri has consistently spoken about justice, equity and inclusiveness in governance and leadership matters.
Observers say the development could further intensify political consultations across Bayelsa West and Bayelsa East, where several influential figures are already being mentioned as possible contenders for the governorship race.
The governor’s remarks are expected to fuel further debate within political circles in the coming months as parties begin underground preparations for the 2027 general elections.
However, many stakeholders believe that his emphasis on fairness and equitable power distribution may help sustain peace and political stability in the state.
Governor Diri has continued to position himself as an advocate of unity and collective progress, repeatedly urging political actors to place the overall interest of the Ijaw nation and Bayelsa State above personal ambitions.
