Atissa Kingdom Development Crucial To State Govt – Diri During Visit To New King
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has paid a courtesy visit to the newly installed monarch of Atissa Kingdom, King Diemeze Victor Awala, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the development of the state capital, Yenagoa–assuring the kingdom that work on the stalled Obogoro land reclamation, and erosion control project will soon resume.
Hotnews gathered that Governor Diri made the assurance on Thursday when he visited the palace of the monarch in Obogoro in Yenagoa Local Government Area, to celebrate King Awala’s ascension to the throne as the 8th Ebeni-Ibe of Atissa Kingdom. The traditional ruler was officially installed on May 2, 2026.
The Governor was accompanied by his Deputy, Dr. Peter Akpe, alongside top government officials and members of the State Executive Council.
Speaking during the visit, Governor Diri said the purpose of the visit was to identify with the new monarch and celebrate his successful coronation.
He described King Awala as a longtime friend whose leadership qualities and experience would undoubtedly contribute to the peace, unity, and progress of Atissa Kingdom.
According to the governor, the kingdom occupies a strategic position in the development of Bayelsa State, particularly as it hosts the Government House and remains a vital component of Yenagoa, the state capital.
“I am particularly happy because I have known you over the years. I remember when you left me to the party we all belong to now. Parties are vehicles for development. So, let us not because of politics become enemies with one another,” Diri stated.
He further remarked that Atissa Kingdom remains highly regarded by his administration, noting that the government values the kingdom’s contributions to the peace and stability enjoyed in the state.
“Your kingdom is a crucial part of Yenagoa and you are also hosting the Government House. Indeed, you are our landlord.
“I commend you for the very peaceful coronation and the peaceful way you conducted yourselves during the period of the death and burial of the late monarch. That is what our government stands for; peace and harmony.
“This visit is to thank God and celebrate with you on your coronation. Knowing you, I am sure you know what to do and you are already doing well.
“This kingdom is one we hold in very high esteem. We believe you will continue to work with government for the peace of the state,” the governor said.
Governor Diri also praised the people of Atissa Kingdom for their mature and peaceful conduct during the transition period following the demise of the late monarch.
He noted that their commitment to peace and harmony aligned with the core values of his administration, which prioritizes peaceful coexistence as a foundation for sustainable development.
Addressing concerns raised by the monarch over the suspension of work on the Obogoro land reclamation and erosion control project, the governor explained that the project was halted due to the need for a comprehensive technical study.
He disclosed that preliminary assessments revealed that adequate studies had not been conducted before the commencement of the project. However, he assured the kingdom that the necessary evaluations were nearing completion and that work would resume as soon as the process was concluded.
On requests for additional developmental projects in the kingdom, Governor Diri urged the leadership of Atissa Kingdom to formally document its needs and present them to the government.
He assured the monarch that the administration would give due consideration to such requests within the limits of available resources.
In his remarks, King Diemeze Victor Awala expressed profound appreciation to Governor Diri and his entourage for the historic visit, describing it as a strong demonstration of the government’s recognition and support for the kingdom.
The monarch noted that the visit had given the people of Atissa a renewed sense of belonging and further strengthened the cordial relationship between the kingdom and the state government.
King Awala also thanked the governor for the support provided by the state government during the burial ceremonies of the late monarch, which he said contributed significantly to the success of the event.
While commending the administration’s developmental efforts, the traditional ruler appealed for further assistance towards the completion of the ongoing palace project and the construction of roads in Famgbe, Yenaka, and Bebelebiri communities.
He assured Governor Diri of the kingdom’s unwavering support and readiness to partner with the state government in promoting peace, development, and prosperity across Bayelsa State.
The visit further underscored the close relationship between the Bayelsa State Government and traditional institutions, as both parties reiterated their commitment to working together for the continued growth and stability of the state.
