Court Orders Sowore’s Arrest Over Absence At Hearing

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has revoked the bail previously granted to the Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Mr Omoyele Sowore.

Hotnews reports that the federal high court has also issued a warrant of arrest after the AAC presidential candidate failed to appear for a scheduled court hearing on Tuesday.

Sowore is currently standing trial on a two-count charge instituted by the Department of State Services (DSS), stemming from a post he made on social media platform X in August 2025.

In the post, the activist reportedly described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal” while reacting to the president’s remarks on corruption during an official visit to Brazil.

The AAC chieftain had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges and subsequently filed a no-case submission, urging the court to dismiss the allegations against him. However, the application was rejected by the court in May.

At Tuesday’s proceedings, neither Sowore nor his counsel, Marshall Abubakar, was present in court. Counsel to the DSS, Kehinde Akinlolu, informed the court that the defendant was aware of the hearing date but failed to appear.

Akinlolu urged the court to revoke Sowore’s bail, alleging that the activist had repeatedly employed tactics aimed at delaying the trial and had once again failed to honour the court’s summons.

Delivering his ruling, Justice Mohammed Umar noted that Sowore had written to the court requesting an adjournment of the matter. However, the judge observed that the letter did not provide any reason for the request.

Citing Sowore’s absence and the circumstances surrounding the application for adjournment, Justice Umar revoked the defendant’s bail and ordered his arrest.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter until June 22 for further proceedings.
