Diri Advocates Increased Use Of ADR For Better Justice System
The Bayelsa State Government has reiterated its commitment to partnering with the judiciary and other stakeholders to increase public awareness and acceptance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as an effective means of resolving conflicts in communities in the state.
Hotnews reports that the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri made this known at the opening ceremony of the Second Bayelsa Multi-Door Courthouse Stakeholders Sensitization Conference held in Yenagoa on Thursday, themed, “Policy Dialogue on Justice Reform.”
Governor Diri represented by his Deputy, Pastor Peter Akpe, PhD, the Governor described ADR as a viable option for settling disputes among individuals, groups, and corporate organizations at when necessary.
He highlighted its benefits, including reduced costs, faster resolution of disputes, and the preservation of peace and harmony within communities across the state.
While acknowledging the important role of conventional courts, Governor Diri advocated for increased use of ADR mechanisms such as mediation, arbitration, conciliation, and negotiation, noting that they offer citizens quicker, fairer, and more accessible avenues to justice.
He emphasized that justice reform is a collective responsibility that extends beyond government and the judiciary to include the Nigerian Bar, traditional institutions, civil society organizations, and the general public.
According to the Governor, the Bayelsa Multi-Door Courthouse provides alternative pathways to justice that preserve relationships, save time, and strengthen community peace.
He urged participants at the conference to make lasting commitments that would advance justice reforms and deepen the acceptance of ADR across the state.
Governor Diri reaffirmed that his administration remains committed to strengthening the rule of law and supporting initiatives that make justice more accessible, efficient, effective and beneficial to all Bayelsans.
