The Acting Chairman of Sagbama Local Government Area, Hon. (Mrs) Diepriye Roseline Yankee-Robinson, within a short period in office, has demonstrated governance of consultation, collaboration and inclusiveness as well as regular engagement with critical stakeholders across the local government area.
Rather than operating governance as a purely administrative exercise, Mrs Yankee-Robinson has consistently created platforms to interact directly with traditional rulers, community leaders, political stakeholders, leaders, youth and women groups, security formations, health workers and other key actors whose contributions are essential to effective governance.
Her engagements have increasingly provided a platform for stakeholders to communicate their concerns, make suggestions and participate in discussions on issues affecting their communities, thereby strengthening the connection between the local government administration and the people mostly at the grassroots.
The council chairman’s engagements with stakeholders, have created avenues for the council leadership to better understanding about the realities confronting communities across the local government area, by interacting with them to know the issues that directly affects them.
This approach of governance in the council, reinforces the principle that local government administration should remain close to the people, particularly for the fact that the local government is the third tier of government with the most direct relationship with communities.
Through these strategic interactions, stakeholders are not merely treated as observers of government activities but as participants and contributors whose views can contribute to policy direction, community development and improved effective service delivery.
Commendably, such stakeholders engagements, reduces communication gaps between the local government leadership and the communities while encouraging stakeholders confidence to see themselves as partners and contributors in council governance.
The administration’s interactions with traditional institutions, political structures, security stakeholders, health workers, women and youth groups and other community actors, points to deliberate efforts to build a broad network of close working relationships at the grassroots.
Within this short period of her administration as chairman, she has already positioned considerable emphasis on familiarization, dialogue and collaboration. When sustained, this approach would further strengthen the relationship between the council and the communities it serves.
Ultimately, effective grassroots governance depends not only on government policies and programmes but also on the quality of relationships between government and the people.
Through her continued stakeholder engagements, the council chairman has positioned the local government area administration on consultation, collaboration, and mostly community participation as strategic steps towards effective governance and sustainable grassroots development.
The approach therefore goes beyond ceremonial meetings but creating an enabling environment for the council leadership to receive feedback, and identify areas requiring attention to strengthen collaborative measures for accountability, transparency, conflict prevention, community mobilization and improved effective service delivery.
