Akpe Urges Women Group To Be Agents Of Social Change

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, has called on women across the country to take a leading role in promoting social engineering and value reorientation, stressing that their influence in the family and society remains critical to building a more peaceful, disciplined and prosperous nation.

Hotnews reports that Dr. Akpe made the call on Wednesday when he received a delegation of the Diri/Akpe Women Support Group from Bayelsa West Senatorial District during a solidarity visit to his office at Government House, Yenagoa.

The Deputy Governor, who was accompanied by his wife, Dr. Favour Akpe, commended the women for their unwavering support and acknowledged the indispensable role women play in nation-building.

He emphasized that mothers and women occupy a strategic position in shaping the values, attitudes and character of future generations, making them vital agents of positive social transformation.

According to him, the increasing challenges of insecurity, crime, moral decline and social unrest in the country require deliberate behavioural change communication beginning from the home, extending to communities, states and the nation at large.

He urged women to champion the cause of value reorientation by promoting contentment, hard work, discipline and respect for societal standards, noting that these virtues are fundamental to sustainable development.

“As women and mothers, we appreciate the role you play in society. You birth today for tomorrow. And so, we all need to be agents of social engineering. Let’s be intentional about issues such as high expectations and entitlement mentality, which is a big problem,” he stated.

Dr. Akpe lamented that society has gradually abandoned the culture of contentment, explaining that nations built on strong moral values and clearly defined standards tend to experience greater social and economic progress.

“Today, we hardly talk about contentment, which is a great value. Societies that are guided by values have standardized expectations, and I think that is why they are making more progress.

“So, as mothers, I really want you to take yourselves to those foundations and talk about them so that people will be content with what they have and work hard, following standards and acceptable norms,” he added.

The Deputy Governor also expressed appreciation to members of the Diri/Akpe Women Support Group for organizing themselves in support of the administration, describing the initiative as thoughtful, purposeful and capable of strengthening grassroots mobilization.

However, he cautioned the women against building the group solely around expectations of political appointments or personal gains, advising them instead to focus on fostering enduring relationships, mutual support and capacity development.

According to him, organizations founded on trust, unity and shared values are more sustainable than those driven by immediate political rewards.

“If you want to have a long-lasting team, then don’t build it totally on political grounds and high expectations. That will not take us far. But build it on the foundation of relationship,” he advised.

He further encouraged members of the group to support one another, reminding them that leadership opportunities come at different times and that patience remains an essential virtue in politics.

“Support one another because not everybody will lead at the same time. Today, some of you are sitting at the far back, but tomorrow you may be the one sitting in front. As you have started, expand your coast not just in politics but also in relationships.

“For me, politics is just one part of our lives. But when you relate well with people, politics and political decisions become easy. You should be patient because those who take irrational decisions in politics usually run out of their breakthrough,” he said.

Earlier, the leader of the Diri/Akpe Women Support Group in Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Chief Ebizi Ndiomu-Brown, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the administration of Governor Douye Diri and Deputy Governor Dr. Peter Akpe.

Chief Ndiomu-Brown, who represents Sagbama Constituency Three in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, said the support group was established to mobilize women at the grassroots in support of the Assured Prosperity administration and to deepen the ideals of good governance across the state.

She assured the Deputy Governor of the group’s unwavering loyalty and pledged to work with other stakeholders to ensure a resounding victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

The visit concluded with a renewed commitment by both the government and the women support group to strengthen collaboration in promoting social development, grassroots mobilization and the continued success of the Assured Prosperity administration in Bayelsa State.
