Bayelsa Receives Legal Icon, Lumumba 4 2026 Law Week
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to strengthen mechanisms for enforcing discipline, ethical standards, and professional best practices among legal practitioners in order to preserve the dignity and integrity of the legal profession.
Hotnews gathered that the governor made the call on Thursday, 4th of June, 2026, while receiving renowned Kenyan lawyer, governance advocate, and public intellectual, Professor Patrick Lumumba, and his wife, Celestine, at Government House, Yenagoa.
The visit formed part of activities marking the 2026 Law Week of the NBA Yenagoa Branch, with Professor Lumumba in Bayelsa to deliver the keynote address during the association’s plenary session.
Represented by his deputy, Peter Akpe, Governor Diri stressed that the legal profession remains one of the most respected pillars of democratic governance and justice delivery, noting that preserving its integrity should be a collective responsibility.
He urged the NBA to collaborate with relevant stakeholders in ensuring that ethical values and professional conduct remain central to legal practice, warning that any erosion of standards could diminish the nobility and public respect traditionally associated with the profession.
The governor commended the Yenagoa Branch of the NBA for its vibrancy and dedication to advancing legal scholarship, promoting public discourse, and maintaining professional excellence.
According to him, the association’s 2026 Law Week has created an important platform for meaningful discussions capable of inspiring positive societal change and strengthening democratic institutions in Bayelsa State and Nigeria as a whole.
He further challenged members of the legal profession to use the conference as an opportunity for self-assessment and peer review, evaluating their progress against global best practices and identifying areas requiring improvement.
Governor Diri described Professor Lumumba as one of Africa’s foremost advocates of good governance, accountability, Pan-African development, and principled leadership, adding that his presence in Bayelsa was a significant honour for the state and the legal community.
“We are especially delighted to learn that your 2026 Law Week will feature one of Africa’s most respected legal minds, a public intellectual and advocate of ethical leadership, Professor P.L.O. Lumumba, as the keynote speaker,” the governor stated.
He noted that Lumumba’s consistent advocacy for justice, transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership aligns with the vision of the Bayelsa State government’s ASSURED Prosperity Administration.
Governor Diri also highlighted the significance of the Law Week theme, “Securing the Future,” describing it as timely and profound in addressing the collective responsibility of leaders, institutions, and citizens to build societies founded on justice, equity, accountability, and sustainable development.
According to him, such conversations are crucial at a time when nations across Africa are seeking ways to strengthen governance structures, deepen democracy, and secure a better future for coming generations.
The governor expressed confidence that deliberations during the Law Week would generate practical ideas and solutions that could contribute to national development and institutional reforms.
In a warm gesture, he invited Professor Lumumba to consider Bayelsa as a second home, acknowledging his contributions to the advancement of governance and leadership discourse across the African continent.
Responding, Professor Lumumba expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended to him and his wife, describing the reception as warm and memorable.
The Kenyan legal scholar emphasized Nigeria’s strategic importance to Africa, noting that the continent’s progress is closely tied to Nigeria’s ability to fulfill its leadership role.
According to him, whenever Nigeria effectively harnesses its vast human and economic potential, the entire African continent stands to benefit significantly.
Professor Lumumba revealed that it was his second visit to Bayelsa State and described the state as a strategically located region with enormous prospects for growth and development.
He expressed optimism about the future of Bayelsa and encouraged stakeholders to continue investing in initiatives that promote good governance, education, and sustainable development.
Earlier, Chairman of the NBA Yenagoa Branch, Clement Kekemeke, explained that Professor Lumumba was specially invited to serve as keynote speaker in order to give the 2026 Law Week international visibility and enrich discussions on the future of governance, law, and leadership in Africa.
Kekemeke thanked Governor Diri and Deputy Governor Akpe for granting the delegation audience and for their continued support for the legal profession in Bayelsa State.
He disclosed that the Yenagoa Branch of the NBA currently has more than 1,500 practicing lawyers, making it one of the largest branches in Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone.
The NBA delegation also included Chairman of the Law Week Planning Committee, Jude Rex-Ogbuku, and senior legal practitioner, Fedude Zimughan.
The visit underscored the growing importance of the NBA Yenagoa Branch as a hub for legal discourse and professional development, while reinforcing calls for stronger ethical standards, accountability, and responsible leadership within the legal profession and across public institutions in Africa.
