Diri Administration Maintains Zero Tolerance For Corruption — Akpe

The Bayelsa State Government has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for corruption and cautioned residents against submitting frivolous and unfounded petitions to anti-corruption agencies.

Hotnews gathered that the Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, gave the warning on Tuesday when he received the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for Bayelsa and Rivers States, Dr. Ekere Usiere, during a courtesy visit to the Government House, Yenagoa.

Dr. Akpe said although politics and politicians are often associated with corruption, the Governor Douye Diri-led prosperity administration remained committed to transparency and accountability in governance.

He expressed concern over the volume of petitions originating from Bayelsa before the ICPC, noting that many of them were found to be frivolous and lacking sufficient grounds.

According to him, while the state government would continue to support genuine efforts to fight corruption, residents must desist from using petitions to make unfounded allegations against individuals and organisations, warning that unjustifiable petitions could attract legal consequences.

The Deputy Governor assured the ICPC of the state government’s cooperation, particularly in strengthening public enlightenment and sensitisation on corruption and related offences.

Earlier, Dr. Usiere explained that the ICPC’s visit was aimed at sensitising the public on the dangers of corruption and promoting preventive measures.

She also expressed concern over the volume of petitions from Bayelsa communities regarding the management of funds associated with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), and proposed a partnership with the Bayelsa State Ministry of Information to intensify public enlightenment campaigns.

The ICPC delegation included Assistant Chief Superintendent, Mr. Evans Peters; Principal Superintendent, Mr. Emmanuel Akpor; Assistant Superintendent, Mrs. Tamaraudoubra Ebebi; and Administrative Officer, Mr. Frank Yileaziba.
