Diri Debunks NDU College Of Health Sciences Relocation Speculations

The Bayelsa State Government has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that it plans to relocate the College of Health Sciences of the Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, describing the claim as false, misleading and without any basis.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, the government said the rumour was the product of the “contorted imagination” of those spreading falsehood to mislead the public and create unnecessary anxiety among students, staff and residents.

The government categorically stated that Governor Douye Diri had neither approved any recommendation from a committee proposing the relocation of the College of Health Sciences nor was such a move under consideration by the Prosperity Administration.

According to the statement, there is no plan whatsoever to move the college from its present location at the Niger Delta University in Amassoma, stressing that the reports circulating on social media and other platforms were entirely unfounded.

The government further explained that Bayelsa State currently operates two colleges of health sciences—one at the Niger Delta University and the other at the Bayelsa Medical University (BMU)—and that both institutions still have annual admission quotas that fall short of meeting the growing demand for medical education.

It emphasized that relocating the NDU College of Health Sciences would be counterproductive, disrupt ongoing academic programmes, negatively affect students’ training, and undermine the steady progress being recorded in medical education across the state.

The statement reaffirmed the Diri administration’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the state’s tertiary education sector, particularly in medical and health sciences, through sustained investment in infrastructure, manpower development and improved learning facilities.

The government therefore urged members of the public, especially students, parents and stakeholders, to disregard the false reports and rely only on official information from authorized government channels.

It also cautioned individuals and groups spreading the rumour to desist immediately from actions capable of inciting unnecessary tension or causing public misunderstanding.

While reiterating its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state, the Bayelsa State Government warned that it would not hesitate to invoke the full weight of the law against anyone found deliberately circulating false information, particularly on social media, with the intent to misinform the public or undermine government institutions.

The government assured the people of Bayelsa that it remains focused on improving educational standards and expanding opportunities in the health sector, rather than engaging in actions that would disrupt the academic progress of students or the development of its higher institutions.
