Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to partnering with credible investors and agricultural organisations to boost food production, create jobs and strengthen food security.

Hotnews reports that Dr. Akpe stated this during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), led by its National President, Dr. Farouk Rabiu Mudi, at Government House, Yenagoa.

The Deputy Governor welcomed AFAN’s proposed partnership with the Brazilian Farmers’ Association, which is expected to commence next month, describing it as an opportunity to introduce agricultural technology, expertise and innovation to Bayelsa State.

He urged AFAN to connect the state with relevant agricultural organisations and help identify markets for locally produced agricultural commodities, noting that flooding and environmental pollution remained major challenges facing farmers in the state.

Dr. Akpe also called on AFAN to prioritise grassroots farmers, particularly those in rural communities, by creating opportunities for small-scale farmers to expand their operations into commercial agriculture.

He expressed appreciation to AFAN for choosing Bayelsa to celebrate this year’s World Food Day and for including the state among six selected for its agricultural technology and innovation programme in collaboration with Brazilian agricultural experts.

Earlier, AFAN National President, Dr. Farouk Rabiu Mudi, said the association chose Bayelsa for the World Food Day celebration in recognition of the achievements of the Governor Douye Diri-led administration in agricultural development and its support for local farmers and agribusiness entrepreneurs.

Dr. Mudi disclosed that AFAN, with over 15 million registered members and more than 60 agribusiness groups, had the capacity to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s food security through effective collaboration with government.

The proposed international partnership is expected to provide opportunities for agricultural innovation, improve farmers’ productivity and strengthen Bayelsa’s capacity to harness its agricultural resources for sustainable development.
