Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has flagged off the maiden fish harvest at the Bayelsa Aquaculture Village in Yenegwe, Yenagoa Local Government Area, describing the initiative as a major milestone in the state’s efforts to diversify its economy, strengthen food security and create employment opportunities.

Hotnews gathered that the Governor, who performed the flag-off on Tuesday, was accompanied by his wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Gloria Diri, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, and other top government functionaries, including traditional and political leaders.

Governor Diri described the Aquaculture Village as a strategic economic investment with enormous potential to provide food, generate employment, attract investors and earn foreign exchange for the state.

He noted that the maiden harvest represented more than the successful production of fish, stressing that it marked the beginning of new economic opportunities for Bayelsans and a significant step towards reducing the state’s dependence on oil and gas.

According to him, aquaculture remains a viable sector capable of transforming Bayelsa’s economy, given the state’s abundant water resources and favourable natural environment for fish farming.

“We are here today to harvest what has been in the ponds. But I think it goes beyond just harvesting the fish. It’s the beginning of a new opportunity for the people of Bayelsa State.

“Aquaculture now provides food, creates jobs and earns foreign exchange. Bayelsa State is determined to lead the aquaculture sector in Nigeria,” the governor stated.

He commended the Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Mrs. Faith Zibs-Godwin, for her commitment and efforts towards reviving the Aquaculture Village, noting that the administration was determined to maximise the state’s enormous marine and aquatic resources for economic development.

Governor Diri also extended an invitation to investors and private-sector players to explore the opportunities available in Bayelsa’s aquaculture industry, assuring them of the state government’s readiness to establish mutually beneficial partnerships that would increase production, strengthen market access and create sustainable economic benefits.

The Governor further expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for recognising the economic importance of Nigeria’s coastal communities through the establishment of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

He also acknowledged the Federal Government’s approval of the Agge Deep Seaport project, describing it as another strategic opportunity capable of boosting maritime activities, trade and economic development in Bayelsa State.

In a related development, Governor Diri approved the construction of the Igbogene-Yenegwe internal link road, a move expected to improve accessibility, facilitate transportation and enhance economic activities around the aquaculture community.

The road approval further underscores the administration’s commitment to providing critical infrastructure that supports agricultural investments, connects communities and creates an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

The maiden fish harvest and the approval of the internal link road highlight the Diri administration’s determination to unlock Bayelsa’s economic potential through strategic investments in the marine and blue economy.

With the revival of the Aquaculture Village, the state is positioning itself to harness its natural aquatic resources, strengthen local fish production, create jobs for its growing population and establish aquaculture as a major pillar of its economic diversification agenda.
