How Diri Destroyed Bayelsans Livelihood With Unrealistic Urban Renewal Plan – Public Commentator
A Public Commentator, Comrade Perekeme Oyinkuro has condemned the prosperity government led by Governor Douye Diri in strong terms for demolishing Bayelsans livelihood with unrealistic urban renewal plan of the state capital, Yenagoa, during the world pandemic (Covid-19), after few months of assumption in office in 2020.
Recall that the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri after few months of assumption in office demolished caravans in major markets in yenagoa metropolis, such as Swali market, Opolo market, Tombia market and other markets across the state capital.
The demolition of caravans across the state capital was carried out without proper investigation, assessment and consideration of the negative impacts of the demolition of the caravans to the affected businessmen and women who are well-meaning Bayelsans and Nigerians at large.
A reliable source revealed that the demolition was carried out without a token of compensation to the affected businessmen and women in the respective markets across the state capital, which led to the destruction of livelihood of so many Bayelsans and Nigerians at large.
Oyinkuro stated that caravans were used by average Bayelsans to carryout wholesale and retail businesses in various markets across the state capital, as a result of the low cost of caravans compared to the high cost of shop rent in the state capital, and the inability to afford shop rent by some Bayelsans.
Bayelsans who were affected by the demolition process in the various markets were left without no source of income to feed themselves and families, as a result of the wrong decision and action of Governor Douye Diri, without proper investigation and assessment of the negative impacts of the demolition.
Oyinkuro stated that the demolition of caravans is practically the demolition of businesses in the state capital, stressing that the demolition process got a lot of Bayelsans jobless, and further increased the unemployment rate, without commensurate job creation to ameliorate the welfare of the people of the State.
He added that some affected Bayelsans still roam around the streets of the state capital without a job, and source of livelihood to cater for themselves and families, as a result of Governor Douye Diri’s lack of knowledge and ideas in delivering good governance to the people.
Oyinkuro stated that no responsible government that is geared towards ameliorating the welfare of the populace will embark on the demolition of people’s businesses, considering the fact that the businesses might be the only source of income or livelihood to cater for themselves and families.
He added that Bayelsans are now living in abject poverty multi-dimensionally as a result of the wrong policies and programmes of the current administration, stressing that it has never been this bad in the history of the state, despite the huge monthly faac allocations to the state from the federation account.
“A Bayelsan committed suicide at the state owned fly-over few weeks ago, due to the high level of poverty multi-dimensionally experienced first ever in the history of the state, despite the huge monthly allocations without commensurate infrastructure or human capital development.
Oyinkuro urged Bayelsans to come out en masse to vote out the Douye Diri’s led Bayelsa State Government in the forthcoming November 11th gubernatorial election; as a government that has impoverished the people of the state ranging from poverty, underdevelopment, unemployment etc.
