Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, have called for true fiscal federalism as a pathway to addressing Nigeria’s national challenges and promoting unity, equity and sustainable development.

Hotnews gathered that the leaders made the call on Thursday during the public presentation of a book authored by Elder Braeyi Ekiye, titled Redefining Nigeria: Essays on State, Nation, Leadership and Democracy, held at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Government House, Yenagoa.

Governor Diri, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Peter Akpe, said the book raised critical questions about power sharing, resource allocation, leadership accountability and the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

He stressed that the Niger Delta, despite its significant contributions to the nation’s economy, continued to bear the consequences of environmental degradation, insisting that justice, environmental restoration and fairness must form the foundation of a restructured federation.

The Governor described the book as a timely contribution to national discourse, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to initiatives that promote democracy, good governance and nation-building.

Similarly, former President Jonathan, represented by former Adamawa State Governor, Boni Haruna, described the publication as a bold contribution to Nigeria’s search for national identity, purposeful leadership and a stronger democracy.

He noted that Nigeria had struggled since independence to define its national aspirations and build a country where all citizens could coexist peacefully and prosper.

Jonathan commended Ekiye for drawing on his wealth of experience in public service to contribute to the development of the country, stressing that purposeful leadership and a deepened democracy were essential to building the Nigeria of collective aspiration.

In his review, Professor Godini Darah described the book as thought-provoking, highlighting the need for patriotic leadership and productive economic policies that would promote indigenous industries and national development.

Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Ambassador Godknows Igali, also commended the author, expressing optimism that Nigeria could achieve unity and prosperity through equity, fairness and justice, particularly in addressing the longstanding challenges confronting the Niger Delta.

In his remarks, Ekiye said the book was part of efforts to chart a progressive course towards building a united, secure and prosperous Nigeria.

The event attracted prominent personalities, including the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Dr. Fred Agbedi, represented by Chief Kelvin Tawari; the Pere of Kabowei Kingdom, His Majesty Peremobowei Erebulu; and Governor Diri’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, High Chief Collins Cocodia.
