The Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has called on political gladiators and actors in the state to shun politics of violence and thuggery as political activities will soon commence towards 2027 general elections in the state.

Governor Diri, who was accompanied by his wives, family members, top government officials, members of the state assembly, political friends and well-wishers for the new year service, appealed to Bayelsans to continue to maintain peace, unity.

Hot News reports that the Governor made the timely appeal during the new year service on Thursday, 1st January, 2025, at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Sampou under Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of the state.

The state helmsman said Bayelsa as a state, ended the previous year on a sad note with the shocking sudden death of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, but the year 2026 will never be the same.

Senator Diri noted that God has a different plan for the government and the people of the state for the year, 2026, stressing that God has a better plan for the people to be happy as a state, and as families.

“We will celebrate, and we will not mourn in this year, 2026,” he added.

As a state, the Governor called on Bayelsans to continue to maintain the peace and unity in the state, noting that every Bayelsan must own up to the security of the state – as security is a collective responsibility.

“Together, we are going to build a better, stronger, peaceful and united Bayelsa state,” the Governor added.

Particularly, as the political season gets closer with activities towards the general elections, Senator Diri said Bayelsa has moved away from politics of violence and thuggery.

“As we prepare towards the next political dispensation, let’s shun politics of violence and thuggery. Let’s continue to build peace and unity amongst us as a state.

“We can only make progress as a state, if there is peace and unity amongst us. I employ every Bayelsan to work with the security agencies in maintaining the peace that we have enjoyed over the years,” Governor Diri added.
