Organized Labour Commends Govt For Approving Demands

The Organized Labour Union in Bayelsa State has applauded the Prosperity Government ably led by the Governor, Senator Douye Diri for approving more than ninety percent of the demands presented by workers to the state government, describing the development as unprecedented in the history of labour relations/demands in the State.

In a joint statement signed by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Barnabas Simon, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Edwin Fefegha, and the Chairman of the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC), Comrade Embeleokpo Andabai, the labour leaders expressed profound appreciation to the Governor for his unwavering dedication to the welfare of workers in the State.

According to the statement, never before in the history of the labour movement in Bayelsa State has any administration responded so positively to the demands of workers, noting that Governor Diri’s decision to approve the overwhelming majority of their requests reflects his genuine commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of the state’s workforce.

The labour leaders also commended the government for constituting a committee to holistically address the numerous issues affecting workers across various labour affiliates, especially those that have repeatedly featured in May Day demands over the years.

They noted that the initiative demonstrates the government’s determination to provide lasting solutions to long-standing concerns of public servants.

The statement further described Governor Diri as a workers-friendly leader, recalling that he had once served as a worker himself and therefore understands the challenges faced by civil servants.

According to the labour unions, the Governor’s background has continued to influence his people-oriented policies and his commitment to ensuring that workers receive the recognition and support they deserve.

The organized labour expressed confidence that the Governor’s gesture would further strengthen the cordial relationship between the government and the workforce, fostering greater cooperation and industrial harmony in the state.

Among the major approvals announced by the Bayelsa State Government, are the payment of promotion arrears covering the period from 2015 to 2017, settlement of other peculiar promotion arrears affecting various labour affiliates, salary increments, payment of uniform allowances for health workers and nurses.

Others are Christmas bonuses for house officers and interns in the health sector, approval of medical residency training funds, payment for call duties, employment of Primary Healthcare workers, as well as several other welfare packages aimed at improving workers’ productivity and morale.

The labour unions assured the government that Bayelsa workers would reciprocate the administration’s goodwill by redoubling their commitment to efficient service delivery and supporting the continued growth and development of the state.

They also offered prayers for Governor Douye Diri, asking God to grant him the wisdom, strength, and courage to successfully complete the programmes and policies of the Prosperity Administration for the benefit of all Bayelsans.
