Bayelsa Govt Approves Six New Schools Across State

The Bayelsa State Government has approved the establishment of six new schools across the state in response to the increasing number of students enrolling in public schools and the growing pressure on existing educational facilities in some communities.

Hotnews reports that the approval, granted by Governor Douye Diri, is aimed at expanding access to quality education, decongesting overcrowded schools and ensuring that children across the state have better opportunities to learn in conducive environments.

The newly approved schools are spread across Kolokuma/Opokuma, Brass and Yenagoa Local Government Areas.

They include Government Model Secondary School, Olobiri, in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area; Government Secondary School, Ewoama, in Brass Local Government Area; Government Secondary School, Kpansia, and Government Secondary School, Amarata, both in Yenagoa Local Government Area.

Also approved are Government Secondary School and Community Primary School, Azeleke, along the Imiringi Road in Yenagoa Local Government Area, as well as Community Primary School, Yenizue-Epie, also in Yenagoa Local Government Area.

The establishment of the schools is expected to address the challenges associated with overcrowding in existing schools, particularly in communities where rising student enrollment has placed additional pressure on available classrooms and other educational infrastructure.

The move is also expected to reduce the distance some pupils and students travel to access public education, thereby bringing learning opportunities closer to their homes and communities.

In a related development, Governor Diri has approved the takeover of Simon Monday-Bubou Memorial Secondary School, Luduon, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, which is currently being funded and administered through community efforts.

The takeover will bring the school under the formal administration of the state government and is expected to strengthen its operations through improved government support, supervision and provision of educational resources.

Speaking on the development, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, said the approvals demonstrated the commitment of the Prosperity Administration to responding to the changing educational needs of the state.

According to him, the steps were necessary to accommodate the increasing enrollment in public schools and ensure that no community is left behind in the state’s drive to improve access to education.

Dr. Emelah noted that bringing educational opportunities closer to the people was consistent with the Assured Prosperity Agenda of the Governor Diri administration, which places emphasis on human capital development and the welfare of residents.

He said the establishment and takeover of the schools would complement ongoing efforts by the government to strengthen the education sector and provide a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.

The commissioner further stressed the importance of creating adequate educational facilities to match population growth and increasing demand for public education, noting that the government would continue to take steps to improve the standard and accessibility of education across Bayelsa.

The latest approvals underscore the administration’s focus on expanding educational infrastructure as part of its broader human capital development programme.

With the establishment of the six new schools and the takeover of the community-funded secondary school in Southern Ijaw, the Bayelsa State Government is expected to further expand its public education network while easing pressure on existing schools and creating more opportunities for children and young people across the state.
