Bayelsa Govt Seeks Dialogue Over ASUU Proposed Strike

The Bayelsa State Government has engaged the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayelsa State chapter, in a strategic meeting aimed at averting a proposed industrial action and ensuring uninterrupted academic activities in the state’s tertiary institutions.

Hotnews reports that the meeting, held as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to sustain industrial harmony within the education sector, underscored the Prosperity Administration’s commitment to dialogue, mutual understanding, and the welfare of academic staff.

Representing the Governor, Senator Douye Diri at the meeting, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, appealed to the leadership of ASUU to suspend the planned industrial action, assuring the union that the state government remained committed to addressing the outstanding issues through constructive engagement.

Dr. Akpe explained that the government was actively working to resolve the pending matters and urged the lecturers to exercise patience while discussions continued.

According to him, Governor Diri places a high premium on education and has consistently demonstrated his administration’s readiness to support institutions of higher learning across the state.

He noted that industrial peace in the university system was crucial to sustaining academic excellence and preventing disruptions that could negatively affect students, parents, and the overall educational development of the state.

The Deputy Governor further reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to maintain open communication with organised labour and professional bodies, stressing that dialogue remains the most effective means of resolving disputes.

He assured the union that the concerns raised by ASUU had received the attention of the government and that practical steps were being taken to reach an amicable resolution in the interest of all stakeholders.

Dr. Akpe also appealed to the union to consider the broader implications of any industrial action on students and the state’s educational system, urging its leadership to continue collaborating with the government in finding lasting solutions to the issues in contention.

The meeting provided an opportunity for strategic deliberate discussions between government officials and ASUU representatives, with both sides expressing their willingness to sustain engagement aimed at resolving the outstanding concerns.
