Bayelsa, Ijaw Nation Lost A Statesman – Diri To Isoun

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, on Friday paid a condolence visit to the family of former Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Turner Isoun, in Abuja, describing his death as a monumental loss to Bayelsa, the Ijaw nation and Nigeria.

Hotnews gathered that Prof. Isoun, was a renowned scholar and pioneer Vice Chancellor of the former University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt (now Rivers State University), died on July 15, 2026, at the age of 87.

Governor Diri, who led a high-powered delegation of government officials and traditional rulers, sympathised with the widow, Mrs. Miriam Isoun, the children, the extended family and the Odi community.

He described the late elder statesman as a father, mentor, activist and patriot whose contributions to resource control, environmental advocacy and the creation of Bayelsa State remain indelible.

The Governor recalled his close relationship with Prof. Isoun and narrated how the late academic demonstrated unwavering commitment to the Ijaw cause by being the first to endorse the Ijaw National Congress’ position condemning the execution of Ogoni rights activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa during the military era.

He also praised the late professor’s role in mentoring young environmental advocates through the Wetland Centre in Yenagoa.

Urging the family to accept his passing as the will of God, Governor Diri said Prof. Isoun lived a fulfilled life and left behind enduring legacies that would continue to inspire future generations.

Responding on behalf of the family, Mr. Diseye Isoun thanked the governor and his entourage for the visit, saying the gesture had brought comfort to the family.

Mrs. Miriam Isoun also expressed gratitude, reflecting on the lifelong partnership she shared with her late husband and their commitment to service and family.
