Bayelsa Transport Company Must Operate As Sustainable Business – Deputy Governor

The Bayelsa State Government has called on drivers and management of the Bayelsa State Transport Company (BTC) to strictly adhere to the operational policies established by the present administration to ensure transparency and accountability to improve service delivery.

Hotnews reports that the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, made the appeal during a meeting with members of the Prosperity Taxi Drivers and the management of the BTC at Government House, Yenagoa.

Dr. Akpe clarified that the vehicles procured by the state government were acquired to strengthen the fleet of the state-owned transport company and not for any hire-purchase arrangement. He explained that the initiative was designed to create employment opportunities for Bayelsans while providing reliable and affordable transportation for residents.

He urged the drivers to carry out their duties with dignity, courtesy and professionalism, stressing that the transport business offers sustainable benefits when properly managed.

The Deputy Governor also assured the drivers that government would examine the concerns they raised, noting that the current disagreement largely stemmed from unclear terms of engagement between the company and its workforce.

Dr. Akpe further directed the BTC management to operate the company in a more business-oriented and transparent manner in line with government’s vision of expanding the transport fleet and improving public transportation across the state.

Speaking on behalf of the drivers, Mr. Konboye Dirinaghan and Mrs. Torukuru Munene appealed to the government to facilitate the regularisation of their employment and review the daily remittance paid to the company from ₦10,000 to ₦5,000, among other requests.

The meeting was attended by the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Priye Broderick, Acting Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, Deputy Governor’s Office Deputy Chief of Staff, Comrade Gowon Toruyouyei, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Bayelsa State Transport Company, Hon. Imomotimi Fanama, and other senior government officials.
