Olympic Day: Diri Reaffirms Commitment To Sports Devt

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing sports as a key tool for youth empowerment, healthy living, and social unity.

Hotnews reports that speaking through the State Head of Service, Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer, at the 2026 Olympic Day celebration in Yenagoa, Governor Diri said his government would continue to invest in sports infrastructure and programmes to provide opportunities for young people to excel.

The Olympic Day celebration featured a walk from Ekeki Park to the Samson Siasia Stadium, sports demonstrations, and the presentation of certificates to participants.

Governor Diri described the event as more than a celebration, noting that it reflects the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect under this year’s theme, “We Move.”

The Governor highlighted ongoing investments in sports infrastructure, including the construction of a 30,000-seat stadium at Igbogene, a 5,000-seat stadium at Sampou in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, and a training pitch at Government House, Onopa.

He also explained that recent reforms at Bayelsa United Football Club were aimed at repositioning the club for a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) by the end of the 2026/27 season.

He encouraged young athletes to remain dedicated and disciplined, assuring them of the government’s continued support through improved facilities and opportunities.

Earlier, Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Daniel Igali, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Pereyi Efeke, stressed that the Olympic movement promotes peace and global unity through sports.

Representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Bayelsa State Sports Council, and the Governor’s Technical Adviser on Sports Development also underscored the importance of the Olympic Day celebration in promoting active lifestyles, unity, and sportsmanship while expressing confidence in Bayelsa’s readiness for the 2026 National Sports Festival in Enugu.
