Breaking: INEC Chairman Holds Strategic Meeting With RECs, Assures Nigerians Credible Elections
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu has assured Nigerians that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be used in the upcoming governorship and state legislature elections.
Yakubu made the assurance during a meeting with all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Saturday.
According to him, the BVAS machines will be used for the elections, though the devices are being improved to avoid a repeat of the glitches seen in the elections last Saturday.
The agenda of the meeting was not made public, but journalists were invited to cover the opening.
This meeting will take place exactly one week after the presidential and National Assembly elections, as well as one week before the governorship and state assembly elections.
The INEC Chairman noted in his welcome remarks that the meeting is to review performance at last week’s elections, adding that there are lessons to be learned from last week’s elections, particularly in terms of logistics management.
He urged the RECs to work harder to ensure that the governorship elections do not have the same glitches as the previous elections, and he called for staff who erred to be disciplined.
