Gov. Diri Assures Continued Support For NDU, Nigerian Law School Yenagoa Branch

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has appealed to the Council of Legal Education (CLE) to increase the admission quota for law students at the Niger Delta University (NDU), from the current 80 to about 300 students.

Hotnews reports that Governor Diri made the appeal on Tuesday when an accreditation panel from the Council of Legal Education, led by the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Dr. Olugbemisola Odusote, paid a courtesy visit to the Government House in Yenagoa.

The Governor said the request was part of his administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality legal education and strengthening state-owned tertiary institutions.

He noted that Bayelsa had three state-owned universities, alongside other tertiary institutions, stressing that his administration would continue to invest in education despite the financial burden.

Governor Diri expressed optimism that facilities at both the NDU Faculty of Law and the Nigerian Law School campus in Yenagoa would witness further improvements before the panel’s next visit.

He also directed the Commissioners for Education and Works and Infrastructure to assess the Nigerian Law School campus and consider government intervention in addressing some of its infrastructure challenges.

Earlier, Dr. Odusote commended Governor Diri for his support for legal education in Bayelsa, particularly the NDU Faculty of Law and the Nigerian Law School campus.

She said the accreditation visit was part of the council’s routine quality assurance exercise, adding that while facilities at the NDU Faculty of Law were in good condition, further improvements were needed to meet global standards.

The Director General appealed for increased investment in infrastructure and human resources, including solar power, connection to the state’s gas turbine plant, staff quarters, additional offices and lecture halls, smart boards, and expansion of the faculty library.
