Put Bayelsa First: Dr. Akpe Urges Politicians, Celebrates Ovieteme Double Awards

Political leaders and key actors across party lines in Bayelsa State have called for unity, peace and peaceful coexistence among the people, urging politicians to place the collective interest and development of the state above partisan considerations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Hotnews reports that the call for a united and peaceful coexistence among members of different political parties, came timely as political campaigns has commenced towards the 2027 general elections.

The call was made during the “Double Blessings” celebration and novelty football match held at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, in honour of Arise News reporter, Ovieteme George, who recently won the Africa Media Award in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the Reporter of the Year Award by the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Dr. Peter Akpe, said the unity, peace and development of the state remained paramount irrespective of political differences.

Dr. Akpe, who performed the ceremonial kick-off shortly after the weekly Prosperity Walk, commended George for his achievements in journalism, noting that his persistence and hard work had continued to project Bayelsa and Nigeria on the global stage.

Former Deputy Governors, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah and Chief Peremobowei Ebebi, also commended the award-winning journalist, describing him as a goal-getter and a professional whose success story should inspire young people across Bayelsa and the Niger Delta.

The State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. George Turnah, said unity and peace remained essential to the development of Bayelsa, stressing that the interest of the people should come before political parties.

Hon. Turnah urged political gladiators to put Bayelsa first, noting that the state had remained peaceful under the Prosperity Administration.

Responding, Ovieteme George expressed gratitude to God and appreciated Governor Douye Diri, Deputy Governor Peter Akpe and other individuals and organisations for their support. He said journalism should be about giving voice to the voiceless rather than merely pursuing awards.

The celebration featured novelty football matches, with Bayelsa Selected All-Stars playing a 1-1 draw against Port Harcourt Ex-Professionals, while Selected Elders lost 1-2 to Bayelsa Selected Elders.
