Tension in Lagos Assembly as Two Speakers Emerges – Meranda and Obasa
By Preye Bagou, Yenagoa
A fresh crisis has erupted in the Lagos State House of Assembly, as impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa returned to the Assembly complex, declaring himself the rightful Speaker despite his removal.
Hot News reports that his return was accompanied by a heavy security presence, including armed police officers.
Obasa’s dramatic reappearance comes just hours after the newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Lagos State reportedly withdrew the security details of Mojisola Meranda, the newly installed Speaker.
The move has fueled speculation and uncertainty regarding the leadership of the legislative house.
In response to Obasa’s declaration, lawmakers of the Lagos State Assembly released a joint statement rejecting his claims, calling his reinstatement a hoax.
They emphasized that any engagement regarding the Assembly’s leadership must be directed to them collectively, dismissing Obasa’s actions as illegitimate.
Meanwhile, Speaker Mojisola Meranda has neither released an official statement nor made a public appearance at the Assembly today, further deepening the tension surrounding the unfolding power struggle.
Obasa was impeached by 32 out of the 40 lawmakers in the Assembly over allegations of mismanagement and misuse of office.
His attempt to reclaim power has now plunged the legislative chamber into a leadership crisis, leaving Lagosians eager to see how the situation will unfold in the coming days.
