Bayelsa Deputy Governor Visits Opu-Nembe, Evacuates Shooting Victims, Calls For Calm Of Residents

The Bayelsa State Government has expressed total displeasure over the recent attack in Opu-Nembe (Bassambiri) by officers of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja that got many youths and women injured in the community.

The Bayelsa State Government call on fleeing members and residents of the community to return to the community to go about their lawful activities, assuring residents that the Police in the state has taken steps to properly identify its officers.

The statement reads, “the Bayelsa State Government notes with regret, the recent security breaches in Nembe, Bassambiri and its environs and calls on fleeing members of the community to return and go about their lawful duties.

“The Chiefs and people of Nembe, Bassambiri are hereby assured that, the Police in the State has taken steps to properly identify its officers and men, against the fake uniformed men, who invaded the community and unleashed terror and violence on law abiding members of Opu Nembe Community.

“The Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who visited the community on the aftermath of the recent security breaches, had already condemned the cases of human rights abuse in Opu Nembe and called on the Inspector General of Police to withdraw the police team from Abuja.

“The Deputy Governor, who visited the community on behalf of Governor Douye Diri on Tuesday the 14th of August, 2023, assured the people that, the State Police Command and other security agencies have taken note of the situation and will henceforth ensure that no law abiding member of the Nembe Bassambiri Community is harassed or molested.

“Consequently, the people have been called upon to report further cases of molestation, acts of lawlessness and insecurity to the Special Advisers on Security, Operation Doo Akpo and the Chief Security Coordinator of the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps on the following GSM numbers: 08055146611,

“The Police have been properly briefed and the rules of engagement have also changed, while equally advising Youths of the community to be law abiding and resist every temptation to confront the Police or any other security personnel no matter the level of provocation.

“The Deputy Governor reassured the people of their safety going forward, as the Government will deal decisively with any individual or group of persons no matter how highly placed, who will cause any breach of the law in Nembe- Bassambiri and its environs.
