The Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri on Friday visited the World Bank office in Abuja, to collaborate with the financial institution to embark on life-changing skill acquisition programmes and trainings.

The primary objective of the governor for the collaborative sponsorship of the skill acquisition programmes and trainings is geared towards improving the welfare of the people of Bayelsa State and Nigerians at large.

Governor Douye Diri was warmly received by the world bank’s branch team ably led by the Country Director, Shubham Chaudhuri.

The Bayelsa governor said the purpose of the visit was to explore opportunities for support by the world’s foremost banking body and other areas of collaboration.

He spoke about the paradigm shift in education and the introduction of the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) scheme in the state under which 17,500 individuals will be trained in three years.

He said the scheme will result in job creation when fully operational and adequately funded.

Governor Diri equally sought the bank’s expertise and support in order to raise the employability of Bayelsa youths, a proposal that the Country Director welcomed.

Mr. Chaudhuri said although the World Bank does not directly deal with sub-nationals, there were opportunities to be explored by states through donor agencies.

He thanked the governor for the visit and that it came at a time the bank’s team in Nigeria was considering visiting some states to assess the performance of some of its programmes.

Chaudhuri also commended Bayelsa, saying the state was currently among top performers in World Bank-assisted programmes such as State Fiscal Transparency Accountability & Sustainability Programs for Results (SFTAS), Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery And Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) among others.
